Today was a beautiful day at Hye Camp, with a cool breeze and sunny skies. After breakfast and chapel we embarked upon a full day of classes (Religion, Armenian Language, Culture & Heritage and Arts & Crafts). We have a lot of wonderful teachers and look forward to learning more about our faith and heritage this week while making new friends. After lunch, we headed to the sports field and then jumped in the pool for our swim test and open swim time. Campers eagerly waited for the assignment of Olympics teams after dinner. The theme that the Hye Camp Olympics Committee (HCOC) chose for this year is Avatar and the four elements: fire, wind, earth, and water. The four teams were assigned at dinner and had one hour to brainstorm a name, chant, favorite song, and a poster presentation for opening ceremonies. All campers, staff, and CITs met in the chapel for the official opening ceremonies of Hye Camp 2013. The teams were The Rolling Stones (earth), ChoorNami (water), The Big Bad Wolves (wind), and The Flaming Hot Cheetos (fire). Team presentations were incredibly creative and got everyone thrilled for all upcoming Olympics events. To close the opening ceremony, Fr. Aren headed up the stairs and placed the torch at the highest point of the chapel. Before evening service, snack was served after the opening ceremonies. Fr. Abraham led evening service and surprised campers with a variation of the song Girl on Fire he named Church on Fire. Then, juniors headed to bed while teens had some free time to bond and relax after a long day. At 11:00PM, it was lights out for all campers as the staff prepared for another eventful day at Hye Camp.
